  • Jason Bartlett was the big winner on Thursday (Nov. 13) at Bally’s Dover, taking two of the four Matron Stakes for 3-year-olds contested on the program.

Hambletonian Oaks winner Conversano used a first-over blitz into the far turn to overpower R Dutchess and take the $132,350 Grade 2 Matron for 3-year-old trotting fillies in 1:52.4.

In line to Bartlett, Conversano got away third behind R Dutchess (Tim Tetrick) and R Lady W (Todd McCarthy), stalked first-half fractions of :27 and :55.4, and commenced an aggressive first-over push upon reaching the backstretch. The Muscle Hill-Celebrity Ruth filly threw down a :26.4 third sectional to clear R Dutchess upon entering the far turn, and she drew clear to win by 2-3/4 lengths. R Dutchess narrowly held off a late rally from My Debt Collecter (Tyler Buter) to save second.

Monalishi, the 9-5 favorite, broke stride heading to the backstretch and finished fifth in the eight-horse field.

Juan Cano trains Conversano, who has now won 10 of 21 starts and earned $617,561 for Hot Lead Farm. As the 5-2 third choice, Conversano paid $7.80 to win.

Bartlett came back to take the $149,350 Grade 3 Matron for 3-year-old male pacers with New York Sire Stakes champion and Breeders Crown runner-up Dandy Ideal, who narrowly parried pocket rival Captain Optimistic for a 1:50.1 score and gained millionaire status in the act.

Dandy Ideal dueled clear of Captain Optimistic (Scott Zeron) on the first turn and cleared for control at the end of a :26.2 first quarter. The pair raced one-two from there on out, with Dandy Ideal holding an uncontested lead through middle splits of :55.2 and 1:22.4 before evading Captain Optimistic by a driven three-quarters of a length. Fusion (Dexter Dunn) finished a ground-saving third.

Hunter Oakes strains Dandy Ideal, a American Ideal-OK Heavenly gelding with 15 wins and $1,034,780 to his name from 27 starts, for Susan Oakes, Thaddeus Wier and Alan Johnston. As the 3-5 favorite, he paid $3.20 to win.

Super Chapter avenged his Breeders Crown defeat to stablemate Meshuggah with a devastating 1:51.2 score in the $163,050 Grade 3 Matron for 3-year-old male trotters.

Dexter Dunn secured a pocket ride for 1-2 favorite Super Chapter behind 2-1 second choice Go Dog Go (Todd McCarthy) and drafted behind splits of :27 and :56.1 before pulling with five-sixteenths to go and instantaneously accelerating clear of Go Dog Go at three-quarters in 1:24.1. The Chapter Seven-Lifetime Pursuit colt sped clear off the far turn, evading Meshuggah, who collared a fading Go Dog Go for second at the eighth pole, by six lengths. Cheers Hanover (Tim Tetrick) saved third.

Marcus Melander trains Super Chapter, a 14-time winner with $1,757,359 earned from 25 starts, for Jeffrey Snyder, Arthur Pronti and Hanover Shoe Farms. He paid $3.00 to win.

Unreasonable took advantage of a live tow behind 6-5 Rodeo Drive Deo and lifted late to post a 1:53.1 win in the $130,350 Grade 2 Matron for 3-year-old pacing fillies.

After getting away seventh behind a :26.4 first-quarter duel between The Last Martini (Doug McNair) and Champagne Room (Yannick Gingras), Unreasonable and Marcus Miller angled third-over into the clubhouse turn to stalk a live flow headed by Asphalt (Tim Tetrick), who was shoved three-wide nearing the :57.3 half. Asphalt sustained her first-over pressure on The Last Martini to force a :27.3 third quarter, and as the pace collapsed on the far turn, David Miller angled Jugette winner Rodeo Drive Deo three-wide to strike the front. No sooner did Unreasonable take aim at Rodeo Drive Deo, and the Huntsville-Roaring To Go filly won by a widening half length. Champagne Room was elevated to third over The Last Martini, who was disqualified after being deemed responsible for interference to six of her rivals on entry to the clubhouse turn.

Trainer Erv Miller’s Ervin Miller Stable shares ownership of Unreasonable, a winner of 11 races and $721,634 in purses from 26 starts, with David J. Miller. She paid $6.20 to win as the 2-1 second choice.

  • McCarthy sweeps Matron sophomore paces

Todd McCarthy captured both 3-year-old pacing divisions of the Matron Stakes, held Thursday (Nov. 7) at Bally’s Dover, teaming up with Little Brown Jug winner Captain Albano to take the $185,500 sophomore male pace and Kentucky Sire Stakes champion Direction in the $116,500 sophomore filly pace.

Captain Albano strode strongly to the fore from post five and controlled a :27 first quarter before yielding to 1-2 favorite and Breeders Crown champion Mirage Hanover (driven by Dexter Dunn), who brushed from the pocket, with a circuit to go. McCarthy bided his time with Captain Albano through middle splits of :53.4 and 1:21.2 before vacating the pocket midway on the far turn and collaring Mirage Hanover by a half length in 1:48.4. Huntingforchrome (Matt Kakaley) stalked the top pair throughout and narrowly held third over Captain Luke.

Noel Daley trains Captain Albano, a 17-time winner with $1,412,773 in the bank from 25 starts, for Patricia Stable, LA Express Stable, Sjoblom Racing and Michael Dolan. As the 6-5 second choice, Captain Albano paid $4.60 to win.

McCarthy’s Matron double kicked off when Direction turned a pocket trip behind two-time Breeders Crown champion My Girl EJ into a 1:50.2 win in the filly pace.

The Always B Miki-Blood Red filly pushed clear of Tarrific (Jason Bartlett) just beyond a :26.4 first quarter before yielding to My Girl EJ (Dunn) with a lap to go and stalking middle splits of :54.2 and 1:22.3. On the far turn, 3-5 favorite My Girl EJ faced intensifying pressure from the first-over Rocket Deo, setting up for Direction to pounce up the open stretch and prevail by a neck over Rocket Deo (Andy McCarthy). My Girl EJ was a game third.

Brett Pelling trains Direction, a Diamond Creek Racing homebred with 12 career wins and $570,221 in earnings from 20 starts. She paid $12.00 to win.

While Breeders Crown champs were upset in both Matron sophomore paces, Ryan Smith’s Allegiant completed the Crown-Matron double with a 1:51.1 win in the $146,100 sophomore filly trot and became a millionaire in the act.

Scott Zeron and Allegiant yielded to the pocket behind R Melina (Todd McCarthy) at the end of a :27.1 first quarter, retook at the bell to control :55.4 and 1:24.1 intermediate fractions, and then edged clear steadily through a :27 sprint home to win by 2-3/4 lengths. R Melina was an isolated second over She Shaq (Åke Svanstedt).

Linda Toscano trains Allegiant, now an 11-time winner with $1,006,222 in the bank from 26 starts. She paid $3.20 to win as the 3-5 favorite.

New York Sire Stakes champion Sir Pinocchio put his nose on the finish line first in the $152,800 sophomore male trot, inheriting the lead off the home turn when Highland Kismet broke stride and narrowly holding off Private Access for a 1:52.4 score.

In line to Jason Bartlett, Sir Pinocchio sat just off a contested :26.4 first quarter, was relegated to fourth with a lap to go when Highland Kismet (Tim Tetrick) cleared the lead, and began his first-over ascent at the :55 half-mile juncture. The Met’s Hall-Lady Cromwell gelding advanced steadily and ducked into the pocket up the backstretch as Highland Kismet rolled to three-quarters in 1:23. Midway on the far turn, Bartlett angled Sir Pinocchio out of the pocket and Highland Kismet broke stride, enabling Sir Pinocchio to inherit the lead turning for home. While all-out in the stretch, Sir Pinocchio found the winning post in time, fending off the late rally of Private Access (Louis-Philippe Roy) by a diminishing head in 1:52.4. Elhelpski (Peter Wrenn) finished a distant third.

Ed Hart trains Sir Pinocchio, now a 13-time winner with $689,329 earned from 24 starts, for owner-breeder Carolyn Atherton. He paid $5.40 to win.

  • Confederate coasts, crushes in Matron

    November 9, 2023 -

Dover, DE — Breeders Crown champion Confederate cracked $2 million in career earnings with a punishing 1:49 win in the $170,850 Hap Hansen Matron Stakes for 3-year-old male pacers on Thursday (Nov. 9) at Bally’s Dover.

A $25,000 supplement into the Matron, Confederate floated into midfield as Cannibal (driven by Yannick Gingras) used :26.1 first-quarter speed to clear Ken Hanover (David Miller) for early control. After briefly tucking into fourth, Tim Tetrick — carrying the colors of Diamond Creek Racing — brushed Confederate to the top, seizing control at the end of a :54.3 half. Ken Hanover reemerged up the backstretch to apply first-over pressure to three-quarters in 1:22.1, but Confederate responded with a :26.4 sprint home, striding clear of Cannibal to win by two lengths under just mild encouragement at the sixteenth pole. Ken Hanover finished third.

Confederate became harness racing’s newest double millionaire with a 1:49 win in the Hap Hansen Matron Stakes for 3-year-old male pacers.

Brett Pelling trains 18-time winner Confederate, a son of Sweet Lou who paid $2.20 to win as the overwhelming favorite.

Dexter Dunn fashioned a Matron double with a pair of 3-year-old fillies: trotter Call Me Goo ($4.20) and pacer Twin B Joe Fresh ($2.60).

In the $141,450 Matron for trotting fillies, Call Me Goo worked forward through the first turn and cleared early leader Helpoftheseason (Gingras) past the :28 quarter, rated a :57.1 half, then parried a first-over threat from Quick Stop (Tetrick) past three-quarters in 1:25.2 before sprinting two lengths clear to a 1:53.2 victory. Quick Stop held second; Helpoftheseason was third.

Jason Skinner trains Call Me Goo, a daughter of Googoo Gaagaa with 16 career wins and $415,689 in the bank, for Graham Grace Stables.

Dunn came back to win the $117,550 Matron for pacing fillies with Twin B Joe Fresh, whom he co-owns with trainer Chris Ryder, Peter Trebotica and Barry Spak.

The Roll With Joe filly settled in third as Zanatta (Joe Bongiorno) carved out early splits of :27 and :55.1 before making her move with three-eighths to go. Once activated, Twin B Joe Fresh strode forward to overtake Zanatta past three-quarters in 1:22.3 and evaded runner-up McSeaside (Gingras) by a measured 1-1/4 lengths in 1:50.3. Always B Naughty (Andy McCarthy) followed Twin B Joe Fresh’s cover into third.

Now an 18-time winner, Twin B Joe Fresh has banked over $1.3 million in her career.

Point Of Perfect ($10.40) and Yannick Gingras rounded out the quartet of 3-year-old Matron winners, prevailing by a head in a three-horse photo over Khaosan Road (Åke Svanstedt) and Dire Straits (David Miller).

The son of Walner sprinted clear of Khaosan Road through a :27.1 first quarter before controlling middle splits of :57 and 1:24.4. Turning for home, Point Of Perfect braced for an inside challenge from Khaosan Road and an outside challenge from Dire Straits, but kept them both at bay while driven out to a 1:55 win for trainer Ron Burke and the partnership of Burke Racing Stable, Hatfield Stables, J&T Silva Stables and Knox Services. He now has won four times in his career and has banked $378,146.

  • Bettor’s Wish & Tall Drink Hanover win Matron paces

    Nov 15

Dover, DE — After Dancin Lou snapped his four-race win streak in the Breeders Crown, Bettor’s Wish ($3.20) got back in the win column with a 1:49.2 score in the $248,350 Matron Stakes for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Thursday (Nov. 14) at Dover Downs.

Bettor’s Wish worked clear of American Mercury (Tyler Buter) just beyond a :27 first quarter, but faced immediate pressure from Dancin Lou (Andy McCarthy) with a circuit to go and on toward a :53.2 half. With a quarter mile to go, Bettor’s Wish began to scamper away, turning aside Dancin Lou past three-quarters in 1:21.3. The son of Bettor’s Delight was kept to task through the final furlong, and he maintained 1-3/4 lengths of clearance over American Mercury. Aflame Hanover (Corey Callahan) angled off the pegs at head-stretch to chase and just miss the runner-up spot.

Trainer Chris Ryder co-owns Bettor’s Wish, an 18-time winner and an earner of over $1.8 million, with Bella Racing Ltd., Fair Island Farm Inc. and Bettor’s Wish Partners. Bettor’s Wish has finished first or second in all 18 of his starts this season.

Following a runner-up finish to Warrawee Ubeaut in the Breeders Crown, Tall Drink Hanover ($13.20) rode the pocket to victory in the $165,900 Matron for 3-year-old pacing fillies, reeling in her arch rival in the process.

Andy McCarthy put Tall Drink Hanover in play from the outset to seize early control, only to yield to prohibitive favorite Warrawee Ubeaut (Yannick Gingras) just behind a taxing :26 first quarter. After stalking a :54.2 half, Tall Drink Hanover found herself boxed as Sunny Dee (Brian Sears) offered first-over pressure up the far side. Off the home turn, Tall Drink Hanover angled to the open stretch and eclipsed the dueling leaders, beating Sunny Dee by three-quarters of a length in 1:50.2. Treacherous Reign (Dunn) lifted from third-over to narrowly take third over the engulfed Warrawee Ubeaut, who missed the board for the first time this year in her Matron defeat.

Tony Alagna trains 15-time winner Tall Drink Hanover, a daughter of Captaintreacherous, for Alagna Racing LLC, Marvin Katz and Riverview Racing LLC.

  • Breeders Crown champs encore with Matron wins

    November 11, 2021

Dover, DE — Twelve days removed from their Breeders Crown triumphs, 3-year-old fillies Bella Bellini and Test Of Faith delivered successful encore performances in their respective Matron Stakes divisions, contested Thursday (Nov. 11) at Dover Downs.

In the $148,550 Matron for sophomore trotting fillies, Bella Bellini ($2.40) sat patiently in midfield while Moni For Lindy and You Ato Dream disputed the lead through a :56 opening half. Dexter Dunn cut the daughter of Bar Hopping loose up the backstretch, and she stormed to the lead with :26.4 third-quarter speed before vaulting clear by six lengths at the end of her 1:52.2 mile, her second-fastest winning mile to date. You Ato Dream saved second from a failing pocket, narrowly holding off a late bid from Iteration.

Richard ‘Nifty’ Norman, who won three of this year’s eight Matron Stakes, trains the David McDuffee homebred, whose 11 wins this season also included the Hambletonian Oaks and the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Final.

Test Of Faith ($2.60) used similar first-over tactics to claim victory in the $129,000 Matron for 3-year-old pacing fillies, but she had her hooves full with a two-pronged challenge from Ron Burke trainees Blue Diamond Eyes and Scarlett Hanover before sealing a 1:49.1 win. David Miller pointed the daughter of Art Major first-over out of third upon reaching the backstretch, and she worked forward to grind down pacesetter Scarlett Hanover beyond three-quarters in 1:21.2 before fending off Blue Diamond Eyes by a half length.

Brett Pelling trains the 22-time winner, whose current five-race win streak includes the Glen Garnsey Memorial, Courageous Lady and Breeders Crown, for Melvin Segal, the Kentuckiana Racing Stable and Eddie Gran.

After a game defeat to Perfect Sting in last month’s Breeders Crown, Don Tiger’s homebred Charlie May ($4.00) landed himself back in the win column, narrowly holding off a sustained charge from Lou’s Pearlman to win the $164,750 Matron for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings in 1:49.2. The son of McArdle sprinted to a clear lead from post 7, rated a :56.2 first half in line to Brett Miller, and then gave his all to parry Lou’s Pearlman through a :53 back-half duel. Abuckabett Hanover lifted off second-over cover to finish third, missing by just a half length.

Steve Carter trains Charlie May, now a 17-time winner.

While the aforementioned trio of Matron winners all have cemented their places on Millionaires’ Row, the 3-year-old colt trot winner did so in only his fourth ever sojourn outside of Indiana. Recent Indiana Sires Stakes champion Swingforthefences ($6.40) lived up to his name in a big way, belting a home run in the $156,300 Matron for his division and out-sprinting Incommunicado to the winning post in 1:52.2.

The son of Swan For All, who came into the Matron on a five-race winning streak, cleared from post six in line to Peter Wrenn, controlled splits of :27, :56.3 and 1:24.1, and braced for Incommunicado’s challenge from the pocket nearing the top of the stretch. Swingforthefences did well to hold his ground in a :28 stretch duel, prevailing by three-quarters of a length over Incommunicado. In Range, the 6-5 favorite, lifted around stalled cover to finish third.

The Melanie Wrenn-trained Swingforthefences gave co-owner David McDuffee a Matron double. L&L Devisser LLC is the other partner in the 14-time winner.

  • Records fall in sophomore Matrons

    Nov 13

Dover, DE — Dexter Dunn rewrote a sizeable chunk of the Dover Downs record book on Thursday night (Nov. 12), piloting both Amigo Volo ($3.20) and Party Girl Hill ($2.60) to track record performances in their respective Matron Stakes splits in the First State.

Amigo Volo’s 1:50.2 effort in the $162,350 Matron for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings earned him a place in the track and world record books, knocking over a second off Pinkman’s world record for sophomore trotting geldings taken in 2015 at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono.

The gelded son of Father Patrick strode to a clear lead over Coventry Hall (Andy McCarthy) and controlled splits of :26.3 and :54.4 while pursued — albeit futilely — by the first-over Play Trix On Me (Joe Bongiorno) to that point. With three-eighths to go, Amigo Volo began to shake away, reaching three-quarters in 1:23 and evading Back Of The Neck (Åke Svanstedt) — who circled three-wide into second — through the far turn.

In all, Amigo Volo amassed 6-1/2 lengths of clearance at the end of his record-breaking mile and 15th career win. Svanstedt trainees finished second through fifth: Back Of The Neck, Coventry Hall, Jula Trix Treasure (Yannick Gingras) and EL Ideal (Andy Miller).

Richard “Nifty” Norman trains Amigo Volo, who now has earned just over $1.5 million, for the Pinske Stables and David J. Miller. The two-time Breeders Crown winner completed a sweep of the Matron Stakes as well, having won as a 2-year-old in 2019 by the same 6-1/2-length margin.

Party Girl Hill may have missed Kiss Me Onthebeach’s divisional world record by two-fifths of a second, but her 1:49 performance in the $154,450 Matron for 3-year-old pacing fillies landed her in the Dover record books.

The daughter of Captaintreacherous yielded to third to stalk Priceless (Andy Miller) and Lyons Sentinel (Tim Tetrick) through a blistering :25.4 first quarter before making her move up the far side. When Lyons Sentinel edged out of the pocket at the :54.2 midway stage, Dunn slid Party Girl Hill second-over to follow live cover. Lyons Sentinel put Priceless away with five-sixteenths to go, and after losing cover, Party Girl Hill continued on to strike the front midway on the far turn before winning by a measured 1-3/4 lengths. JK First Lady (Gingras) rode the winner’s cover to finish second; Rocknificent (Scott Zeron) also benefitted from the outer tier and gained into third.

Party Girl Hill, whose only defeat in 16 career starts to date came in the Breeders Crown, has amassed $880,345 in earnings — all this season. Chris Ryder trains the Tom Hill homebred.

An early break by Hambletonian winner and even money favorite Ramona Hill prevented her from finding redemption in the $163,050 Matron for sophomore trotting fillies, and it also paved the way for Hambletonian Oaks winner Sorella ($5.40) to score the 10th victory of her career.

Yannick Gingras used just a bit more than a :26.3 first quarter to work Sorella clear of early pacesetter Ab’sattitudexpress (Tetrick), before keeping the first-over Crucial (David Miller) at bay through a :58.2 middle half and evading a wide rally by 17-1 outsider Guinevere Hall (Dunn) to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:53.1. Ab’sattitudexpress finished third.

Nancy Takter trains Sorella, who has now earned $848,362 in her career. Breeder Elmer Fannin shares ownership of the Muscle Hill filly with Crawford Farms Racing and Brent Fannin.

The retirement of Tall Dark Stranger made the $179,600 Matron for sophomore male pacers far more wide open than most previous events within the division, and the late-blooming Cattlewash ($2.80) had to work for every penny of the winner’s share of the purse.

The son of Somebeachsomewhere had to exert himself through a :26 first-quarter duel with Tattoo Artist (Gingras) before clearing shortly thereafter — but once in control of the terms, David Miller had little opportunity to ration Cattlewash’s speed. After only managing to rate the half to :53.4, Cattlewash faced first-over pressure from Little Brown Jug winner Captain Barbossa (Joee Bongiorno) up the far side.

While Cattlewash shrugged off Captain Barbossa’s challenge on the final turn, another pair of challengers were waiting in the wings to take their shots in the final furlong: Tattoo Artist launched for the open stretch, and No Lou Zing (Dunn) vaulted off cover. Cattlewash was driven out to narrowly prevail in 1:48.3. No Lou Zing lunged late for second over Tattoo Artist, who was fully extended to stay on.

Ron Burke trains 10-time winner Cattlewash, who has now earned $799,777 for owner-breeder Bill Donovan.

  • Gimpanzee, When Dovescry win Matron trots

    Nov 15

Dover, DE — Breeders Crown winner Gimpanzee and Hambletonian Oaks winner When Dovescry added another Grand Circuit title to their respective résumés with victories in the Matron Stakes for 3-year-old trotters on Thursday (Nov. 14) at Dover Downs.

In the $208,300 Matron for sophomore trotting colts and geldings, Gimpanzee ($2.80) and Brian Sears sprinted to the early lead before yielding control to Chin Chin Hall (Dexter Dunn) at the completion of a :27 first quarter. The son of Chapter Seven was relegated to third as Don’t Let’em (Yannick Gingras) brushed aggressively from midfield to clear with a circuit to go, but angled first-over to attack soon after stalking a :54.4 half.

On the backstretch, Gimpanzee sustained a strong attack on Don’t Let’em, taking charge effortlessly past three-quarters in 1:23 and drawing away at will for a 1:51.1 score. Chin Chin Hall emerged up the open stretch to take second, four lengths back, while Pilot Discretion (Andy McCarthy) rallied off cover for third.

Marcus Melander trains 17-time winner Gimpanzee for Courant Inc. and the S R F Stable.

The $176,150 Matron for 3-year-old trotting fillies saw Simon Allard send Breeders Crown runner-up When Dovescry ($7.60) clear of Beautiful Sin (Åke Svanstedt) and Only Take Cash (Tim Tetrick) into the first turn before controlling splits of :27, :56.1 and 1:23.4. With three-sixteenths to go, When Dovescry faced a bid from Evident Beauty (David Miller), who circled stalled cover to challenge on the final turn. The daughter of Muscle Hill successfully held her ground, holding off a late stand-side rally from Only Take Cash by a half length in 1:52.2. Evident Beauty stayed on between fillies to maintain third.

Rene Allard trains 10-time winner When Dovescry for the Go Fast Stable, Yves Sarrazin, Kapildeo Singh and Lawrence Dumain.

Bettor’s Wish & Tall Drink Hanover win Matron paces

After Dancin Lou snapped his four-race win streak in the Breeders Crown, Bettor’s Wish ($3.20) got back in the win column with a 1:49.2 score in the $248,350 Matron Stakes for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Thursday (Nov.

  • Rookies

  • Naughty Beauty, Fragment and Heart For Two were winners in graded Matron Stakes at Bally’s Dover Downs Thursday (Nov. 7). Todd McCarthy drove two of the three winners for trainer Andrew Harris and his co-owners William Pollock and Bruce Areman.

After breaking slowly and sitting seventh in the nine-horse field at the quarter in :27, Naughty Beauty (Bettor’s Delight-Beautyonthebeach) driven by Todd McCarthy rallied to finish just a head in front of I’m A Lou Lou (Tim Tetrick) in 1:53.4 in the Grade 2 $104,900 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old filly pacers. Tall Dark Tequila (Jason Bartlett) finished third.

Naughty Beauty, trained by Andrew Harris who co-owns with William Pollock and Bruce Areman, now has two wins and two seconds from six starts with $77,450 in earnings. The fifth choice in the betting at 10-1 paid $22.80 to win.

In the Grade 3 $122,600 Matron for 2-year-old colt and gelding pacers, Jason Bartlett guided Fragment (Huntsville-The Show Returns) to an easy 3-3/4 length victory for trainer Per Engblom and his Engblom Stable LLC and co-owners Douglas Sipple and Peaceful Acre Farm.

Apocalypseblue Chip (Todd McCarthy) was second and Thai Hanover (Jeremy Indof) third.

As the odds-on favorite, Fragment paid $3.40 to win and improved his lifetime record to 15-9-2-0 while increasing his earnings to $582,566.

In the third and final Matron Stakes on Thursday, this one a Grade 2 with a purse of $110,300 for 2-year-old filly trotters, driver Todd McCarthy, trainer Andrew Harris and his co-owners William Pollock and Bruce Areman teamed up again for their second Matron victory on the night with Heart For Two (Gimpanzee-House Music FR).

McCarthy sat a pocket trip before pulling ahead in the stretch to finish a half-length in front of pacesetter Atlantic Summer (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) in 1:57.3. R Ro (Tim Tetrick) was third.

It was the second win in 10 starts and increased her earnings to $106,340.

  • Luna Lovegood strolls to Matron triumph

After falling short in the finals of the Kentucky Sire Stakes Championship Series and Breeders Crown, Holly Lane Stud East Ltd.’s Luna Lovegood put it all together in Monday’s (Nov. 11) $116,100 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old trotting fillies at Bally’s Dover, coasting to a 1:53.2 win over Kendra.

Dexter Dunn floated Luna Lovegood forward from the outside in the compact field of four, and the pair used the entire first turn to advance at the flank of early leader Kendra (driven by Todd McCarthy) before clearing to the lead after a :28.3 first quarter. Once on top, Luna Lovegood remained unchallenged through middle splits of :57.2 and 1:25 before only facing a mild threat from Kendra off the home turn. Luna Lovegood kept to her task through the lane under the mildest of encouragement from Dunn, using a :28.2 final quarter to keep Kendra 1-1/4 lengths at bay.

Halfadozen (Daniel Dubé) finished third, another 17 lengths behind.

Marcus Melander trains Luna Lovegood, a daughter of Gimpanzee-Southwind Venus with five wins and $246,650 in career earnings from nine starts. As the prohibitive 1-20 favorite, she paid $2.10 to win.

Supplemental entry Dandy Ideal wins Matron

Supplemented by his connections to the tune of $20,000, Dandy Ideal brought a three-race winning streak into Thursday’s (Nov. 14) $178,900 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old male pacers at Bally’s Dover. And the American Ideal-OK Heavenly gelding did not disappoint, making good on his owners’ risk with a lifetime best-equaling 1:50.3 victory.

Dandy Ideal and driver Tim Tetrick sprinted to a clear lead over Thirsty Thursday (driven by Matt Kakaley) and was in complete control through early splits of :27.2 and :56. Up the backstretch, Knockout Round (Andy McCarthy) began a first-over ascent from third and offered mild pressure into Dandy Ideal to three-quarters in 1:23.3. Dandy Ideal shrugged off his outside rival off the home turn and was driven out to a 1-3/4-length win over Thirsty Thursday, giving trainer Hunter Oakes a sweep of the exacta. Knockout Round protected third after leveling off.

Dandy Ideal, a five-time winner with $137,475 in the bank, is owned by Flying A Racing Stable, Thaddeus Wier and Alan Johnston. He paid $3.20 to win as the 3-5 favorite.

Faze upsets in Matron filly pace

After winning the Kentucky Golden Rod Series final and finishing third behind Papi Grad in her first Grand Circuit assignment, Faze captured the biggest win of her career to date when she nabbed Rose up the open stretch in the $133,100 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old pacing fillies, held Wednesday (Nov. 13) at Bally’s Dover.

Faze and driver Tim Tetrick asserted themselves early, dueling through the first turn with 2-5 favorite Rose (driven by Yannick Gingras) before yielding for the pocket at the end of a :26.4 first quarter. Rose and Faze continued one-two through a :56.1 half before Pilar Hanover mounted a first-over push into second up the backstretch and forced a :28.2 third sectional.

On the final turn, Rose shrugged off Pilar Hanover’s challenge, but Faze, poised to pounce up the open stretch turning for home, rallied to collar the favorite up the inside in the final yards to win by a neck in 1:53.1. Lyons Benz (Corey Callahan) finished a ground-saving third, beaten 1-1/4 lengths.

Nancy Takter trains Faze, who competes as a homebred for Diamond Creek Racing, Farhi Standardbreds and Spreydon Racing. The Sweet Lou-Darlinonthebeach filly has won four of seven career starts, has earned $120,650. As the 7-2 second choice, she returned $9.00 to win.

  • R Melina, Maxim Hanover capture rookie Matrons

Nov 3 | Dover, DE — R Melina ($3.60) coasted to victory in the $138,000 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old trotting fillies while Maxim Hanover ($18.60) rallied off cover to spring an 8-1 upset in the $145,000 Matron for rookie pacing colts and geldings on Thursday (Nov. 2) at Bally’s Dover.

A winner of the Kentuckiana and multiple legs of the New York Sire Stakes, R Melina and driver Tim Tetrick brushed to the fore at the completion of a :28.1 quarter to seize control from French Champagne (Åke Svanstedt). Once in control, the Chapter Seven-Goodtogo Hanover filly was never in doubt, evading Svanstedt’s other entrant, Upallnight Hanover (Scott Zeron), by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:55.4. French Champagne finished third.

John Butenschoen trains R Melina, a six-time winner from 10 starts with $315,613 in earnings, for M and L of Delaware and Alabama Harness Associates.

Leading up to the Matron, Maxim Hanover’s only victories had come in the Reynolds Stakes and the Liberty Bell — and both via overland routes.

Andy McCarthy worked out a similar trip for the Captaintreacherous-Mean Leen colt in the Matron, landing him third-over from sixth behind the live cover of Booming Economy (Yannick Gingras) while Wish You Well (David Miller) tore through middle splits of :54.4 and 1:23.4.

Booming Economy pushed three-wide off the home turn to engulf Wish You Well just inside the eighth pole, but Maxim Hanover switched off cover and surged to collar that rival by a neck in 1:52. Magnifico Hanover (Brian Sears) was third.

Robert Cleary trains Maxim Hanover, now a three-time winner with $128,640 in career earnings, for Royal Wire Products Inc.

  • Venerable dominates in Matron, leads Norman double

November 4, 2021, from the USTA Communications Department

Dover, DE — After an uncharacteristic break in stride marred her chances of a Breeders Crown title, Mohawk Million winner Venerable ($2.10) righted the ship on Thursday night (Nov. 4) at Dover Downs, delivering a scintillating 1:54.3 win in the $130,700 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old trotting fillies and leading a stakes double for trainer Richard “Nifty” Norman.

“I pulled up that night and told Nifty, ‘I have no reason why she did that,'” driver David Miller said of Venerable’s misstep in her Breeders Crown elimination. “I really don’t know — she’s a 2-year-old trotter. It’s not unusual for them to do something like that.”

With her lone flaw in the rearview mirror, Venerable looked every bit her usual self in the Matron, cruising through a :57.1 first half before accelerating up the backstretch to evade pocket rival HL Revina and first-over challenger Missy Trix to three-quarters in 1:25.2. After leaving those rivals behind midway on the far turn, the daughter of Walner and Jolene Jolene steadily increased her margin of clearance over the field, reaching the winning post 6-3/4 lengths in front while confidently handled by David Miller. I’m Happy Hanover (Brian Sears), the longest shot on the board at 47-1, flew down the grandstand side to finish second over HL Revina (Montrell Teague); Missy Trix (Dexter Dunn) faded to fourth.

“Dexter got in to follow me on the last turn, but I yelled at her (Venerable) and she coasted on,” Miller continued. “I never pulled the ear plugs on her. She felt like herself.”

Now a nine-time winner in 10 starts, Venerable has earned $927,295 for David McDuffee, Melvin Hartman, Paul Bordogna and Steven Arnold.

“You can’t dwell on the last race — you’ve got to move on,” Norman said. “We needed to get a good look at her and make sure she was OK, and she passed all the tests. She was really good. It’s hard to tell watching her because everything looks so easy for her, but David said she had no problems at all.”

Venerable will seek a 10th win in her seasonal curtain call, the Nov. 20 Goldsmith Maid at The Meadowlands.

Norman completed his stakes double with Joyride Hanover ($5.20), who defeated stablemate Shipnstrol Hanover in the $145,100 Matron for rookie pacing fillies.

In line to Tim Tetrick, the American Ideal-JK Higher Power filly sprinted to a clear lead over Galleria Hanover through a :27.2 quarter and maintained a solid pace throughout. After rating a :56 half, Joyride Hanover faced pressure from even-money favorite A Girl That Twirls up the backstretch before bursting to a four-length lead upon cornering for home and maintaining three lengths of clearance at the end of her 1:52 lifetime-best win. Shipnstrol Hanover (Miller) checked in traffic at the eighth pole behind a faltering Galleria Hanover, but salvaged second up the open stretch; Frantasy Hanover (Corey Callahan) lifted off cover for third.

Norman defers some of the credit for Joyride Hanover’s success to Eddie Dennis, who campaigned the three-time winner this summer before owner Eric Good transferred her to Norman’s stable before the She’s A Great Lady:

“She’s a really nice filly,” Norman said. “Eddie Dennis trained her down and did a good job — she was a good horse when I got her.”

Thus far, Joyride Hanover has earned $181,364. She, too, will be pointed to The Meadowlands for her season finale, slated to compete in the Nov. 20 Three Diamonds.

In the $179,200 Matron for 2-year-old male trotters, Threepointbluechip ($11.00) kept a host of challengers at bay to win for the third time in his career. In just his second American start, the son of Walner and Dunk The Donato brushed to the lead with a lap to go before evading a first-over push from Periculum up the backstretch, turning aside pocket foe Letsdoit S at the top of the stretch, and then outlasting a trio of late closers to prevail in 1:55. James MacDonald drove the victorious Jim King Jr. trainee for Thestable Three Point Grp. Slay (Andy McCarthy) punched through the open stretch to take second, missing by a half length, while Esplosione (Dunn) cascaded off stalled cover to finish third.

Market Based ($5.40) kicked off the Matron program with a 1:50.4 win in the $146,700 2-year-old male pace, delivering a pillar-to-post 1:50.4 win in line to Dexter Dunn. The Nancy Takter trainee asserted himself from the pole, controlled fractions of :27.1, :55 and 1:23.1 en route to his fourth career win, shrugging off a challenge from pocket foe Nautical Hanover before evading runner-up and 2-5 choice Fourever Boy (Mike Wilder) by two lengths. Chuck Pompey, Ed Gold, and H And M Taylor Stable own the son of Sweet Lou and Economy Terror.

  • Back Of The Neck (Ake Svanstedt) pulled a mild upset and broke the local track record for four-year-old male trotters at Hollywood Dayton Raceway on Saturday (Oct. 2).  Nailing runnerup When Dovescry (David Miller) in the final stride of the 1:51.4 mile, the lightly raced son of Ready Cash triumphed for the second straight week after winning a top conditioned trot at The Meadowlands last week.

“This is a very good horse,” exclaimed Svanstedt in the winner’s circle.  “When he’s in his top form he can go with these top trotters.”

It took every inch of the mile for Back Of The Neck to earn the victory by a nose over the pacesetter When Dovescry.  Former Hambletonian winner Forbidden Trade (Bob McClure) nabbed the show dough in the stellar field that included four millionaires and combined earnings over $11 million.

It was the 11th career win for Back Of The Neck from just 28 lifetime starts.  He is owned by Howard Taylor, the Order By Stable, J. Taylor, B. Cynwyd and Svanstedt.

  • Burke sweeps Matron rookie paces

    Nov 6

Dover, DE — Following a narrow defeat in the Breeders Crown, Southwind Gendry ($2.60) bounced back with authority and posted a 1:50 win in Thursday’s (Nov. 5) $193,000 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings at Dover Downs and capping a sweep of the Matrons for rookie pacers for trainer Ron Burke.

The son of Always B Miki and Gambler’s Passion was caught wide in midfield after leaving from the outside post seven, but bided his time while Bayfield Beach (Andy McCarthy) controlled fast early splits of :26.1 and :54.2. Up the backstretch, Southwind Gendry ascended first-over to force a :27.2 third quarter before taking the lead midway on the far turn.

After putting Bayfield Beach away, Southwind Gendry remained strong and edged clear to evade the second-over Southwind Petyr (Dexter Dunn) by 1-1/2 lengths. Bayfield Beach held third.

The 10-time winner increased his career earnings to $583,069 for the Burke Racing Stable, Phil Collura, Knox Services and J&T Silva-Purnel & Libby.

Burke also won the $170,000 Matron for 2-year-old pacing fillies with Continualou ($3.20), who brushed aggressively to claim control of the terms with a circuit to go and threw down a :54.4 back half to evade her foes in a dynamic 1:50.2 performance.

David Miller floated the daughter of Sweet Lou and Continual Velocity into fifth on the first turn, waiting while Paulas Bet Hanover (Gingras) and Darby Hanover (Andy Miller) dueled through a :26.4 first quarter before storming to the fore at the bell. Once in charge, the 3-5 choice was never in doubt. She widened her lead steadily and ultimately defeated stablemate Paulas Bet Hanover by 5-3/4 lengths. Darby Hanover finished third.

Continualou, who finished fourth in last week’s Breeders Crown at Harrah’s Hoosier Park, has now won four times in her career and has banked $262,605 for the Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi.

    In other Matron action:

$167,200 2-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Trot

With the scratch of Magical Muscle Man reducing the field to four, Type A ($4.20) and Yannick Gingras had little trouble working to the lead from the outside post. They gained control over even-money favorite Incommunicado (Scott Zeron) through a :28.2 first quarter, travelled uncontested through a :58.3 middle half, and dug in late to withstand a late push from Incommunicado to win by a half length in 1:55. Ethan T Hanover (Tim Tetrick) finished third, another 1-1/2 lengths behind.

Trainer Nancy Takter co-owns Type A with Frank Canzone and Christina Takter. The son of Southwind Frank and Up Front Laura has won three of his eight career starts to date and has amassed $152,433.

    $189,600 2-Year-Old Filly Trot

Illuminata ($47.20) earned the second win of her young career with a pillar-to-post, 1:54.4 upset over seven foes in the Matron for rookie trotting fillies. Trainer-driver Åke Svanstedt sent the daughter of Chapter Seven and Traviata to the lead from post four, and she used a :27.2 first quarter to seat Frankly My Dear (David Miller) in the pocket. From there, they traveled one-two through a :58.4 middle half before Illuminata used a :28.3 sprint home to keep Frankly My Dear 1-1/4 lengths at bay. Pub Crawl (Andy Miller), who was sent off the twos-on favorite, only mustered mild gains to take third after stalking the front flight throughout.

Tristan Sjöberg’s Knutsson Trotting Inc. and Jeff Gural’s Little E LLC own Illuminata, whose career bankroll increased to $127,415.

The Matron Stakes for 3-year-olds are scheduled for next Thursday (Nov. 12), also at Dover Downs.

  • Redemption for Papi Rob Hanover in Matron

    Nov 7

Dover, DE — After being disqualified from first in the Breeders Crown at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Oct. 25, David McDuffee’s Papi Rob Hanover ($2.40) found redemption in the $186,000 Matron Stakes for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings, held Thursday (Nov. 7) at Dover Downs.

The son of Somebeachsomewhere and Panera Hanover eclipsed the $500,000 mark in career earnings with an effortless 1:50 win, the fifth of his career.

“I was just waiting to be the last one to the front,” said driver David Miller, who yielded to Cattlewash (Yannick Gingras) and Put To Right (Andy McCarthy) in a :27.1 quarter before brushing to the top with a circuit to go. After clearing the lead just before a :55 half, Papi Rob Hanover found no further challengers, coasting to three-quarters in 1:22.4 before drawing away by 5-1/4 lengths with plenty in reserve.

“He’s very sharp; he’s ending up the year very well,” concluded Miller. “He was strong tonight, and just a real nice horse.”

Cattlewash gave futile chase to protect second, while Father Nuno (Brian Sears) emerged off cover to take third.

“David said he could have gone (1:)49 pretty comfortably,” remarked Brett Pelling, who trains Papi Rob Hanover. “He’s a very special horse, great-gaited, and knows what he’s doing. It takes a good horse to beat him. All along, we planned on the latter part of the season, so he’s 100 percent going to the Governor’s Cup.”

In the $181,600 Matron for juvenile male trotters, Breeders Crown winner Amigo Volo ($2.20) proved a similarly easy winner, clearing from the outside post six under Dexter Dunn and controlling splits of :27.3, :56.1 and 1:24.3 before drawing away to a 6-1/2 length victory over Patriarch Hanover (Matt Kakaley) and Moveoutofmyway K (Gingras) in 1:52.4, just a fifth of a second off his lifetime mark taken in the Bluegrass at The Red Mile. The mile was, however, a new world record for a freshman trotting gelding on a five-eighths-mile track.

Richard ‘Nifty’ Norman trains the gelded son of Father Patrick and Margarita Momma, now a six-time winner, for the Pinske Stables and David J. Miller.

Tim Tetrick swept the Matrons for 2-year-old fillies, taking the $176,400 pace with Breeders Crown runner-up Lyons Sentinel ($2.40) and the non-wagering $147,600 trot with Next Level Stuff.

In the filly pace, Lyons Sentinel stalked a blistering :26.1 first quarter from third behind Lady Lou (McCarthy) before brushing to the fore with a circuit to go. After out-sprinting Lady Lou through a :54.2 half and keeping a first-over attack from Hen Party (Gingras) at bay through three-quarters in 1:22.3, the Captaintreacherous-Tutu Hanover filly worked clear to a 1:50.3 victory, the ninth of her career. Perfect Storm (Sears) rallied into second, 2-1/4 lengths back, while Hen Party faded to third.

Jim King Jr. trains Lyons Sentinel, whose previous victories this season include the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes final and the She’s A Great Lady, for Threelyonsracing.

Next Level Stuff coasted to a pillar-to-post 1:53.2 win in the filly trot. The daughter of Sebastian K S and Nantab cleared Queen Of The Hill (Yannick Gingras) through a :27.2 first quarter and remained unchallenged through middle splits of :56.1 and 1:25.1. Next Level Stuff began to edge clear on the final turn, and she defeated Queen Of The Hill by 2-1/2 lengths. Luv U Bye Click (Steve Smith) finished third, beaten by 25-1/4 lengths.

Jim Campbell trains the Runthetable Stables homebred, whose six career wins have all come in stakes competition.

The Matron Stakes continue next Thursday (Nov. 14) with all four divisions for 3-year-olds.
